A young sailor on the Pharaon from Marseilles. His employer is Pierre Morrel, owner of the firm Morrel & Son. Following his promotion to Captain, he is betrayed by his crewmate Danglars and his friends Fernand Mondego and Gaspard Caderousse who sent an anonymous tip of a Bonapartist plot to Gérard de Villefort, the public prosecutor. Villefort sentences Edmond to a lifetime in prison without parole at the Château d'If. There, he befriends Abbé Faria. He suffers in prison for 13 years before escaping.

Upon escaping, he uncovers the great treasure left for him by Faria. With his newfound wealth, Edmond assumes the persona of The Count of Monte Cristo and travels to Paris to seek revenge.

In the end, he fell in love with his Greek slave Haydée. He bequeathed his fortune to Maximilien Morrel and Valentine de Villefort.
