A staunch royalist who tried to seperate himself from his father's Bonapartist views. An anonymous tip caused him to arrest Edmond Dantès. Seeing that Edmond was carrying a letter from the Isle of Elba, the place of Napoleon's banishment, addressed to his father Noirtier de Villefort, Gérard de Villefort, hoping to prevent any connection between him and his father, sentenced Edmond to life in prison at the Château d'If for treason.

Afterwards, he moved to Paris and married Renée de Saint-Méran, with whom he had a daughter: Valentine. During this time, he had an affair with Baroness Danglars, and had a son: Benedetto.

He tried to bury Benedetto in the garden of his wife's estate when Bertuccio, an enemy, ambushed him, stabbed him, and stole the box he was burying, believing it to be treasure. He later married Héloise with whom he had a son: Édouard. With help from the Count of Monte Cristo, Benedetto revealed Gérard de Villefort's heinous crimes, destroying his reputation.
