Maximilien Morrel
Soldier and son of Monsieur Morrel and brother of Julie Herbault. He falls in love with Valentine de Villefort and becomes close friends with the Count of Monte Cristo, who regards him as his own son. The Count is able to disrupt Valentine's arranged marriage to Baron Franz d'Épinay so that she may marry Maximilien. After Valentine's supposed death, Maximilien falls into a deep depression and becomes suicidal. The Count offers to travel with him in hopes of lifting his spirits. He reveals that he saved Valentine so that she may marry Maximilien. Maximilien and Valentine become the sole heirs of the Count's fortune.
